HighCountryBeetle

Mountain Pine Beetles in the High Country.

Recent newspaper articles have focused on the mountain pine beetle epidemics in the High Country, particularly Summit and Grand Counties. This is a truly stand-replacing event in the lodgepole forests at higher elevations

Other bark beetles such as balsam fir beetle and spruce beetle are also at epidemic levels in many fir and spruce forests.

Warm winters, aging forests and a massive build-up of beetle populations are contributing factors to these epidemics.

An epidemic of mountain pine beetle is also occurring in ponderosa pine up Ute Pass and in Woodland Park. This epidemic is more cyclical in nature and has devastated large areas as well.

We have yet to see a surge in mountain pine beetle in Colorado Springs, but it will be important to monitor, especially in the native ponderosa forests.

Mountain High tries to keep up-to-date on what is happening elsewhere so we can recommend the appropriate care for your trees. In many cases we will recommend protective sprays. Please call us if you have questions.
